Once you know that your happiness (and let's face it: that's what every single one of our actions is geared towards: feeling happy, or at the very least, not feeling in pain) is not dependent on ANYTHING external, you are free.
There's a quiet revolution taking place, a new understanding of how we humans create our experience of life.
This revolutionary understanding is simple: our experience of life only EVER comes from the inside-out. What we feel, and therefore experience, moment to moment to moment, is our thinking, nothing more, nothing less. Outside events have NO power whatsoever to make us feel a certain way, however much it can appear that way (particularly when our consciousness is low or we’re feeling insecure).
This fact, that it is our thinking about what happens ‘out there’ which creates our experience, not the events themselves, explains why some days someone can pull out in front of us suddenly and we feel outraged at what a rubbish and rude driver they are, and other days we hardly even notice them doing so. Our experience of what happens ‘out there’ is dependent on the flavor of our thinking about what happens ‘out there’.
Crucially this DOES NOT mean we need to make an effort to think positively, or happily, about everything - some people’s actions can be genuinely not nice, or affronting. But because we’re all programmed to move towards happy and peaceful feelings and away from painful ones, once we know how life works - how we create our experience via our thinking - we naturally find ourselves experiencing more peaceful thoughts and less angry or upset ones.
I’ve known all this stuff for years, I’ve taught this stuff (!) but now I ‘get it’ on a level which is quietly and earth-shatteringly life changing.
I'd love to hear your thoughts and insights about this way of looking at things. Email me: kate@internationalstaffcare.org or you can message me on Facebook and we can carry on the conversation.
